SERVICES REQUIRING PHYSICIAN SUPERVISION

Diagnostic X-ray services performed in a facility that is directed by a physician or group of
physicians is covered if they are performed under the direct supervision of a physician.

MOBILE CT SCAN
If a mobile CT scan is furnished at an ambulatory health care facility other than a hospital-based
facility, such as a freestanding physician-directed clinic, the CT scan must be performed by or
under the direct personal supervision of a radiologist or other qualified physician.

SERVICES NOT REQUIRING PHYSICIAN SUPERVISION

Certain diagnostic X-ray procedures are also covered when they are performed by technicians
without the direct supervision of a physician. However, the technicians’ general supervision and
training, as well as the maintenance of the necessary equipment and supplies, must be the
continuing responsibility of a physician. Procedures performed by technicians include skeletal
films involving the extremities, pelvis, vertebral column or skull and chest, or abdominal films
that do not involve the use of contrast media.
